Most businesses are configuring wifi for their employees to have access on their mobile devices. Wifi can be a great productivity tool. Yet, who is implementing the wifi solution? Are you giving the password out to your employees? What happens when an employee is terminated?
Is your wifi on the same network as your business network? When designing a security model, you want to create layers of protection. Do you really want your server’s data to be a single password away from theft because everyone has your wifi password? Is your network infrastructure already properly secured PRIOR to implementing wifi?
MAJOR RISKS FROM UNSECURED WIFI
- Data loss
- Privacy loss
- Reputation tarnished
- Illegal activity performed that is traced back to your IP address
- Governmental or private association fines levied against the organization
FREE MITIGATION TIPS
- Create a policy to change your wifi password frequently (Once per month or perhaps when there is an employee termination)
- Configure your wifi network to be on a separate subnet from your business network. Make it impossible for a wifi user to be able to reach your server.
- Even if you permit wifi access for guests, you can still enable a password that can only be retrieved in person.
- Strategically place wifi access points and check how far the signal can reach.
